Napkin Exhibition 07

I was invited to take part in an exhibition with a group of more than 40 selected artists, designers, illustrators and typographers working in the UK. All were sent generic white paper napkins to doodle, draw or explore on. Amongst the participants included; Anthony Burrill, Eley Kishimoto, FAT, Gavin Turk, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Jasper Morrison, Julie Verhoeven, Michael Marriott, Quentin Blake and Shin Azumi.

When I pick up a paper napkin in a restaurant or cafe I inevitably end up playing with it, folding, scoring, rolling and creasing or scrunching so I decided to look at the napkin as a material for construction and explore it's structural potential as a 3D object, as opposed to a 2D suface or canvas.
I wanted to emphasise the folds and creases you get in napkins, which even though clean and linear, also have a soft edged quality.
The final form was realised as a clock, but the structure could also have been applied to an architectural, fashion and textiles, furniture or jewellery context.

Profits from the sales of the pieces are donated to The Peninsula School Feeding Association and Concern Worlwide's FoodAid Campaign.
